They Did Their Share(Gaston Gros)

On Veteran’s Day we honor
Soldiers who protect our nation.
For their service as our warriors,
They deserve our admiration.

Some of them were drafted;
Some were volunteers;
For some it was just yesterday;
For some it’s been many years;

In the jungle or the desert,
On land or on the sea,
They did whatever was assigned
To produce a victory.

Some came back; some didn’t.
They defended us everywhere.
Some saw combat; some rode a desk;
All of them did their share.

No matter what the duty,
For low pay and little glory,
These soldiers gave up normal lives,
For duties mundane and gory.

Let every veteran be honored;
Don’t let politics get in the way.
Without them, freedom would have died;
What they did, we can’t repay.

We owe so much to them,
Who kept us safe from terror,
So when we see a uniform,
Let’s say "thank you" to every wearer.

  1. To me, this poem is about the forgotten soldies and all of the services that are taken for granted. This poem reminds us to not forget and to appreciate.

  2. I feel bad reading this shortly after Memorial Day because I, like many people I suspect, didn't even celbrate accordingly.

    The use of "some" is quite impacting because "some" seems like only a small amount, but the repitition of the multiple situations shows just how many people should be honored on Memorial Day.

  3. this poem is for ALL the veterans. they speak about almost every major war in U.S. history and touch on every role in the war. this poem really makes you sit down and think about what it really means and takes to be apart of war and leaves you almost compelled to go out and do for the veterans that the government isnt doing anything for

  4. I too like some of us feel that this poem does go out to the veterans who have fought for our country and like many people including me sometimes don't realize and take this service for granted. Like Cristina said, I myself don't take much time to recognize them but in reality its through them that we live so comfortable and its because of this that they should be recognized.

  5. This is a typical veteran's day poem in order to honor the veterans in our country. It has a nice rhyme and flow to it. It reminds us of all of the sacrifices that these soldiers and ex soldiers have and continue making for US, in order for us to live our lives accordingly, like nothing else is happening. They have sacrificed their own lives and happiness for us and i agree that i also feel bad reading this after memorial day and thiking that really most people do not celebrate accordingly.

  6. To be honest, i dont find anything remarkable about this poem. It's your typical veterans day poem; it has a clear cut rhyme scheme and a regular flow. Not saying its a bad poem, but its definitely run of the mill. The poet talks about how we honor (and neglect to honor) the veterans who constantly fight for our freedom.
