An Identity

An Identity by some girl (chevar cummings)

I had one once -

an identity

having one meant

the world to me -

an identity

before it was

taken from me

i knew who i

was and who

i'd become

without it I

was no one -

lost identity

i no longer

understood

understood the

meaning of life

i need it back -

my identity

  1. I wonder what took her identity away? I'm sure she's not talking about identity theft quite literally(=P) but...I never thought of identity that could be taken, only something you give up. Maybe it's something that gives her a sense of identity that has been taken away and not literally her identity. Unless she has been imprisoned...

  2. Maybe she was kicked out of the popular clique at school? Maybe she was raped/molested. Both scenarios can strip you down to the core of who you are (one scenario more than the other, im sure.) She sounds broken and lost. Like a turtle without a shell..or peanut butter without jelly. I wonder if she knows that finding another identity will probably be the hardest thing she'll ever have to do...?

  3. I agree with the two comment above... and she does seem lost. This poem after reading this poem I am now wondering who in this world can feel this way; lost and hopeless where they don't even know who they are. I feel sorry for her or him and hope that this never happens to anyone...

  4. The author promotes a sense of vitality towards her identity. She feels like she needs her identity to live. Maybe she never had her identity and now that she's thinking about it she's lost within herself. Maybe others told her who she was all along. In either case, thinking about this makes me question who I REALLY am.

  5. I really liked how the poem started by the poet describing what her identity was and what it meant to her. She then goes even further to describe what it is to loose ones identity and how without an identity one looses the meaning of life. I think this poem is simple and easy to understand with a very interesting way of looking at identity

  6. This poem has a very nostalgic tone to it. The girl, having obviously lost some part of herself, is very sadly looking back at first at the times where she used to feel complete, with her identity 100%sure. Something obviously took someof her power and identity away, probably some unfortunate event in her life, and now she feels lost and doesnt know why she lives anymore or who she is. This can happen to all of us in a depressed moment or stage in our lives.

  7. im not sure about you guys, but i believe that identity is fluid. its constantly changing in response to experiences and epiphanies received by the specific individual. so in this case it is possible she is feeling lost because she found something shattering that completely changed her whole concept of herself and before she thought she knew who she was and she doesnt anymore.
